Croatia: The Perfect Family Destination

Summertime, Travel Time

Have you been looking for a fabulous summer European destination that your entire family will enjoy, but you’re not sure where to start? Are the adults in your family interested in sightseeing and seeing incredible views, experiencing fabulous food, and learning about the history of the region you are visiting, but you also have college age, teenagers, or younger kids to consider? Planning an incredible vacation is always fun, but planning a vacation for a family of all ages definitely requires more consideration and thought.

Why Croatia?

If you have kids still in school and especially in high school or college, you understand the dilemma of having to travel in the summer when they aren’t missing classes. But, traveling in Europe in the summer means more tourists, hotter weather, and more expense. It’s all about balance. So, I wanted to pick a destination that would still provide an incredible European experience for my kids, but that would also offer swimming, boating, and beaches to keep everyone cool and happy in between seeing the sites.

Our Itinerary

So, I set my sites on Croatia for my family of five. We had the pleasure of exploring this incredible country for ten days at the end of June. Because there are so many fabulous places to visit in Croatia and we only had a short time, I had to narrow down the trip and create a must-see list. We flew into Split with the intention of traveling south and using Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik as our home bases.

From Split, you can easily venture on day trips to Krka National Park, Plitvice National Park, Omis, Trogir, or take a boat trip to Islands such as Hvar and Vis.  While traveling from Split to Dubrovnik, you can make stops in Ston for fabulous oysters or venture to Bosnia to visit Kravice Waterfalls, Medjugorge, or Mostar. From Dubrovnik, you can visit many islands or Montenegro all while allowing enough time to visit the Old City itself and climbing the city walls or taking the cable cars to Mt. Srd to see the incredible views.

Our Favorite Things

When I asked my kids their favorite parts of the trip, they all agreed that Krka National Park was their favorite adventure from Split. Swimming near the falls and watching all of the fish and other wildlife around the park was incredible. From Hvar, their favorite part was our full-day boat trip to explore around Hvar and Vis where they could swim from the boat and explore different beaches throughout the day. From Dubrovnik, the Captain Candy store was clearly the winner, but they also really loved walking on the fortress walls and the cable car to the top of Mt. Srd.

The next time you are sitting down to discuss your upcoming travel plans, I would definitely take the time to consider visiting Croatia. Whether you are traveling with a family or adults only, there are so many things to do that one trip will never be enough to see everything. My kids are 15, 13, and 7 and we are already planning to go back in 2019!
